Dean's Office

Dean Conor Frailey

Position

The Dean is chief academic adviser to the approximately 420 undergraduates assigned to JE. Residing within the college, he assists students in all matters concerning their academic programs, applies and enforces the Academic and Undergraduate Regulations that govern student behavior, works in conjunction with the Registrar's Office and the Yale College Dean's Office, and supervises freshman advising. As needed, he refers students to resources, offices, or persons that can be of assistance to them, and actively collaborates with these sources of support and counseling. He writes letters of recommendation for fellowships or postgraduate-work or study. He also teaches one course a year, serves on a range of University committees, oversees student housing, and coordinates a variety of college activities. The Dean is also a great resource for a wide range of other matters and advises students on everything from personal crises to post-graduation plans. In cases of incapacitating illness or family emergency, the Dean has the authority to postpone deadlines for academic work or final exams.

About

Joining Jonathan Edwards College in the spring term of 2012, Conor Frailey is originally from the suburbs of Chicago. He stayed close to home for his undergraduate studies and attended the University of Chicago, where he majored in mathematics and physics. After graduating, he spent a year teaching math and coaching soccer in his former high school. He then went on to graduate studies in mathematics at Yale where his research has focused on representation theory of p-adic groups and abstract harmonic analysis. He expects to earn his degree in May.

While new to JE, Dean Frailey is not new to Yale University. He began his doctorate work at Yale in 2006 and since has gotten to know Yale very well. Prior to serving as dean, he taught the introductory calculus courses for four years, tutored in the Residential College Math and Science Tutoring Program for five, served as a Graduate Student Life Fellow and as a Graduate Career Services Fellow, organized the Graduate Student Seminar in the math department, and was a Davenport College Graduate Affiliate. In addition, his younger sister, Kerstin, was Morse ’09.

In his spare time, Dean Frailey enjoys participating in all sports but soccer especially. He also watches far more internet television than is appropriate – particularly Arrested Development, Mad Men, Downton Abbey and 30 Rock. While he moves into the college alone and without any pets, he has three siblings who have promised to visit often – though Dean Frailey admits Killian, Kerstin, and Danny aren’t nearly as cute as Jasper, Serena, and Puck.

Dean Frailey is extremely excited for his position as dean, citing particularly the closeness and warmth of the JE family.
